I recently achieved my biggest goal of visiting NYC. When moving into my first university apartment in belfast about to start my hospitality degree my mum bought me a huge NYC canvas as motivation to chase my dream of getting to experience the concrete jungle that is New York. Little did I know that my dream would become a reality when i moved to the US for my years internship. Watch the video to see some of the highlights of my trip!
Leaving Ibis, West Palm and all the people I became close to broke my heart. But there is no doubt I have made some great friends and even better memories. As I board my flight heading to Bradley International I cant help but think, this wont be the last time I visit West Palm Beach. Arriving in Connecticut was a shock to the system, it was absolutely freezing!!! Our new General Manager Bryan picked us up from the airport, as we made our journey from Connecticut to Hampden Massachusetts it made us feel like we were back in Ireland. Fields as far as the eye can see, not what we're used to in Florida. See the video below for photos of my last days in West palm and the beginning of my new journey in MA.
After being away from home for over 6 months it was finally time for some of my family members to arrive! Being a ‘Home Bird’ I found it quite difficult at the start of season being so far away from home and getting used to the time difference of 5 hrs. between Ireland and the US! I had been counting down the days since mum booked her flights. The day finally came, I was working 9-5pm in the admin office and the day was going by so slow. I couldn’t wait to get home grab my bags and check into the hotel early, all evening consisted of checking the status of the flight and of course it was delayed by 3 hrs. just to heighten the anticipation of their arrival. I headed for the airport at 12:30am I felt sick to the stomach, I was about to see my family after months of being apart. Swarms of people began to approach the arrivals lounge and my eyes scanned through the crowds looking for my mum, and finally I recognize her scarf I immediately drop everything and run to her and the rest of my family (yes it was literally this dramatic like something from the movies). We stood hugging and crying for at least 10 minutes I cannot describe the feeling of seeing everyone again, the first thing she said was “your dad sends his love” which made me cry even more. Dad’s terrified of flying so he definitely couldn’t have made the 12hr plane journey to West Palm.
More importantly us Irish have just celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. In preparation for the big day we shopped for our St. Patrick’s Day themed outfits, dressed up head to toe in green. Adorned with Irish flags, shamrocks and not to forget our “Irish Princess” crowns. We started our day off in a local Irish pub called Paddy Mac’s where we were entertained with Irish traditional music and later with more up to date tunes. We had a traditional Irish lunch of Cottage pie and pint of Guinness. We spent most of our day there before heading to the Clematis Block Party. Clematis closed off one of there streets for the main stage and entertainment. Families and friends were out in there hundreds to celebrate the Irish holiday; we even met some native Irish from Dublin and Belfast. We all had a great evening Irish dancing up and down Clematis Street.
Right now I am anticipating the arrival of my family, recently everyone’s family have been over visiting which has made me feel very homesick. Now I have four days to wait I cannot wait to be reunited with my mum and the rest of my family. We’ve planned to stay in Orlando for a few days and visit universal studios as well as visiting Singer Island etc.
March has been a crazy busy month between getting a job I my new club up north and planning the St Patrick’s Day Celebrations! My new club is called Great Horse it is situated in the town of Hampden in Massachusetts. Myself and my roommate and fellow Irish compatriot Vicki are both moving up to Massachusetts at the beginning of May to begin our second season of university internship. We recently booked our first class flights, traveling in style for our new adventure! I am extremely excited to begin my next part of internship with Great Horse, it is a great opportunity to see another part of the United States as well as meet new people etc. I will miss Ibis and everyone I have met here in West Palm but I will hopefully be back in the near future, for now all good things must come to an end.
Within Ibis I have many different job roles from Atrium and Pub Hostess to Banquet and events assistant. I work in a fast pace, hectic environment so when I have a day off I like to forget about work and relax. Since the last blog I have had a few day trips, at the end of January I attended one of Rasheeda and Frank’s cultural events which was a trip to Fort Lauderdale to see the Theatre show The Book of Mormon. Myself and a few of my friends decided to take the train to Fort Lauderdale after work and stay over the night before the show, we stayed in an air B&B near the sea, we headed into the main part of the town for dinner when we arrived.
The next day we packed up our things, had lunch by the docks while waiting on a water taxi. We took the guided tour up the river showing us various different houses and buildings owned my celebrities. Later that evening we met up with Frank, Rasheeda and the rest of the J1’s in the irish bar before walking to the theatre to see the show. The show was absolutely fantastic, it was side splittingly funny. Definitely a must see!
Cant believe it’s the fourth month of my placement at Ibis, time has literally flew past! January is a hectic month in Ibis, with the Christmas and New Year festivities slowly coming to an end extended families visiting for the holidays return back home. There have been a few iconic moments in January already. Butler Search Group hosted a party for all the interns at O’Sheas Irish bar in Clematis Street. This gave everyone an opportunity to see friends from different clubs as well as make new friends and hear about how their American adventure is going so far!
